ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of the congregation was held on Sunday, January 20. Various reports were given, including committee reports from St. Mary’s Guild and the Altar Guild. The 2008 projected budget was also presented.

The Nominating Committee presented its recommendations to fill two Vestry seats. Susie Mosley and Louis Alderman were elected to three year terms.

A motion was entered, seconded and approved by the congregation to contact parishioners by letter regarding a reassessment of their pledges for the 2008 FY. Letters were mailed later in the week to encourage each congregant to prayerfully consider any changes they might wish to make in that regard.

A SPECIAL SERIES

Father Jim’s series on the Episcopal Church continues in lieu of Bible Study at 9:30 AM on February 3 and 17. This is a worthwhile occasion to learn more about our church and its philosophy and practices. We hope you are taking advantage of this opportunity.

LENT ALREADY?

Easter is early this year (March 23) so Lenten Season begins on Ash Wednesday, February 6. Please note the following:

SHROVE FAT) TUESDAY: The men of the church under the direction of the venerable Rick Reed will stir up a pancake supper at 6 PM on Tuesday, February 5 for all comers. We hope Robert Johnson will once again take up his post at the kitchen door as Sergeant-At-Arms to bar all women from interfering with the pancake flippers. Last chance for rich, fatty food. Come for the food, fun and fellowship.

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE: We are blessed this year to have Father Jim coming at 6:00 PM for Imposition of the Ashes and the celebration of Holy Eucharist. Lent is a holy season. We hope you will begin your 40 day journey by attending this special service.

LENTEN SUPPERS: Each Wednesday evening at 6 PM during Lent we will hold a Lenten devotional and soup supper. Volunteers are needed to provide soup and trimmings February 13-March 12. A sign up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall. Thanks.

MANY THANKS

We want to extend our thanks to Marj Kassien and John Yuronka for their loyal, invaluable and committed service on the Vestry. We deeply appreciate the support and help they have provided.

Thanks also to Susie and Lou for their willingness to serve on the Vestry for the next three years.

DIOCEAN CONVENTION

A delegate and alternate are still needed to represent our congregation at the annual convention in Jonesboro, AR February 22-23. All expenses will be paid. If you are willing to volunteer, please let Sharon know.

FROM THE GUILD

ECW will not have a business meeting in February. We will have a social

meeting instead! So… come with an appetite to Mena’s new Mexican restaurant, La

Villa on Tuesday, February 19th at 6:00 PM. Hope to see you there!

BOOK CLUB

The Second Tuesday of the Month Book Club has resumed meeting at 6:30 PM in the Parish Hall. February’s book is Pigs in Heaven, by Barbara Kingsolver. Please join us on Tuesday, February 12 even if you haven’t read the book. And bring along a list of books you would like to recommend reading March-November.

By the way, 2007’s selections are available for check out from the church library as well as many other books of interest. Coming soon to the shelves: Home to Holly Springs, the latest book by Jan Karon.

______________________________________

OH, TANNENBAUM

Gather friends and family at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, December 2 and check out the lighting of our Christmas tree on the RMCC campus. The ceremony will feature the MHS choir and hot beverages will be served.

Driving directions: Turn on old Highway 71 in front of Mena Ford. It runs along the east edge of the college property and winds up on US 71 near Hillcrest.

Many thanks to Susie Mosley and her crew of elves who designed and installed the tree.

SERVICES OF PRAYER AND

HEALING

Each Wednesday during Advent we will hold special public services at 6 PM. The services are meant for those present seeking healing and those not present for whom they wish to pray. The dates are Wednesday, December 3, 10 and 17. Please come and join your prayers in spiritual union with all who are seeking God’s healing grace.

POUND THE PRIESTS?

No clubs, please, but your special gifts for them in appreciation of their devoted ministry to our congregation. We’ll pound Father Jim on Sunday, December 21 and Father Doug on January 4.

HANGING OF THE GREENS

In preparation for our special Christmas Eve service, we will be decorating the church at 10 AM on Wednesday, December 23. Help is needed; please come if you are able.

CANDLELIGHT CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICE

Fr. Jim will celebrate Holy Eucharist at 7 PM on Christmas Eve. Our traditional service will be enhanced this year with the addition of lighted candles. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Gather your family and friends and come for a truly lovely and moving Christmas Eve.

FROM THE GUILD

All ladies in the church are invited to our ECW Christmas party, on Monday, December 22, at 5:30 pm at the home of Linda Johnson. Please bring finger foods. Drinks will be provided.

Our annual Bazaar was indeed a success, thanks to everyone’s help! Net total

- almost $1800. This enabled the ECW to give an additional $150 to the already budgeted $250 for the Optimist Christmas Food Baskets.

It’s time to put our plan in motion for our annual Swaddling Clothes Project on behalf of the Rosebud Mission on the Lakota Sioux Reservation in SD. Children’s mittens, gloves, and knit caps will decorate our Advent tree in the parish hall. In addition, infant and toddler clothing and baby blankets are desperately needed. These items will be shipped after the New Year.

The Mission has sent a special request this year on behalf of The Tree of Life United Methodist Ministries which is planning a party on December 19th for at risk children. They are struggling to gather enough toys for the children. Please bring a toy for a child to the church by Monday, December 8 to allow shipment to SD.

POINSETTIA FUND

Contributions are being accepted for the beautification of the altar and sanctuary on Christmas Eve. Contributions may be dedicated as you wish. Forms for contributions are on the table at the back of the sanctuary. Please complete the form and place it in the collection plate or give it to Sue Wigger before December 20.

MANY THANKS

Beckie Duer for organizing the church family photos on the bulletin board.

SHEEEEES BACK….

The Calendar Elf has returned from her summer hiatus. See other side.

OPEN DOOR SUNDAY

- A motor caravan will leave from the church at 6 AM, Saturday, October 11 for those who wish to attend the Open Door Sunday program at St. Mark’s, Little Rock. We will return that evening. You should have received a letter and program from Bishop Benfield with particulars. If you are interested in attending and/or driving, please let Sharon know by Sunday, October 5. Registration is required.

- On Sunday, October 12 we will throw open the red doors and welcome one and all to our services. Invite someone to attend with you and help them through the liturgy if they are unfamiliar with our church. WHAT SHALL I RETURN?

The Vestry has designated Sunday, November 2 as Stewardship Sunday. You will receive a letter, church budget to date and a pledge card in early October. Please prayerfully consider your pledge of time, talent and treasure for the work of Christ Church in the coming year.

KEENY BEANY, HALLOWEINY

Brew up a pot of chili and join the fun on at 5 PM, Friday, October 31 for our annual Chili and Hot Dog Blast. The church will provide the hot dogs and all the trimmings. While you’re at it, drag out that old costume and dress for the occasion. Double-dog dare ‘ya!

FROM THE GUILD

- Our annual Bazaar has been scheduled for Nov 7-8th. We will advertise a Silent Auction, Crafts, Specialty Food Items, and a Resale Boutique. Members of the congregation are encouraged to start bringing suitable items (NO clothing) to the parish hall for the Resale Boutique. There are also some projects (sewing, embroidery, and other) on a table in the parish hall. Please look over these and take home anything you would be willing to complete in the Crafts department for the bazaar. Should you be interested in donating an item for the Silent Auction (check out that fabulous Razorback rocker), please notify Marj or Beckie.

- ECW meeting will be held on Wed, Oct 15, at 5PM in the parish hall. We need all ladies to come join us, as this will be our last meeting before the Bazaar!

- ECW Fall Gathering (Annual Meeting) will be at St. Margaret’s in Little Rock on Friday, Nov 14 and Saturday, Nov 15th. We will be introduced to the House of Prayer, an outdoor haven dedicated to contemplative prayer on the wooded acreage at St. Margaret’s. Registration fee is $40.00, which includes Saturday lunch and program presented by the Rev. Susan Sims-Smith. For more detail, read the flier posted on the bulletin board. See Beckie for registration forms.

REMEMBER IN PRAYER

Don Forbis, Bette Ann McRee, Judy Rawlings, Ralph Troup, Carol Williamson and Donna Yuronka.

REASONS WHY I NEVER WASH (I.E.ATTEND CHURCH)

A pastor, disturbed with the excuses parishioners offered as to why they didn’t attend church, included the following in the Sunday bulletin:

- I was forced to as a child.

- People who wash are hypocrites – they think they are cleaner than everybody else.

- I wash only on special occasions, like Christmas and Easter.

- None of my friends wash.

- I bought a bad bar of soap once, so I swore I would never wash again!

- I used to wash, but I got bored and stopped.

In Memoriam

Dean Wandell Clark

12/5/30-8/3/08

I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

We extend to Sally and the Clark family our heartfelt condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

INTERCESSORY PRAYER REQUESTS

As you enter the Sanctuary you will note a basket and a stack of cards on the right hand side of the aisle. You are encouraged to complete requests for prayer for someone in your life. The request(s) may be for any purpose and are to be placed in the basket. The Prayer Request Basket will be taken to the altar and presented for special intercessory prayer during the Eucharist.

WE HAVE A CHAIRPERSON!

Our thanks to Carol Williamson who has agreed to chair the committee planning the 110th anniversary in 2009 of the founding of Christ Church. Carol needs volunteers to assist in the celebration. Please give her a call if you are willing to help.

STATEMENT BY PRESIDING BISHOP AT CONCLUSION OF LAMBETH CONFERENCE

Many bishops came to this gathering in fear and trembling, expecting either a distasteful encounter between those of vastly different opinions, or the cold shoulder from those who disagree. The overwhelming reality has been just the opposite. We have prayed, cried, learned, and laughed together, and discovered something deeper about the body of Christ. We know more of the deeply faithful ministry of those in vastly differing contexts, and we have heard repeatedly of the life and death matters confronting vast swaths of the Communion: hunger, disease, lack of education and employment, climate change, war and violence. We have remembered that together we may be the largest network on the planet — able to respond to those life and death issues if we tend to the links, connections, and bonds between us. We have not resolved the differences among us, but have seen the deep need to maintain relationships, even in the face of significant disagreement and discomfort. The Anglican Communion is suffering the birth pangs of something new which none of us can yet fully appreciate or understand, yet we know that the Spirit continues to work in our midst. At the same time patience is being urged from many quarters, that all may more fully know the leading of the Spirit. God is faithful. May we be faithful as well.

The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop and Primate, The Episcopal Church

COLUMBARIUM MEETING

For those of you who have an interest in internment in the columbarium, Marlene and Rick Reed will present an informational meeting after the service on Sunday, September 28.

PRAY, FAST, WITNESS

In solidarity with people of faith throughout the world and in response to the Anglican Communion’s call, Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation invites you to commit on Thursday, September 25 to:
+Pray. Say prayers with special intention for the extreme poor throughout the world.
+Fast. Skip at least one meal in solidarity with the nearly 1 billion people who go to bed hungry each night. (As possible depending on health … consult your doctor if in doubt)
+Witness. Participate in an online advocacy action (www.e4gr.org) promoting our government’s fulfilling its promises to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

AR DEATH PENALTY STUDY AND MORATORIUM CAMPAIGN

We have received information and a petition from Joyce Hardy, State Coordinator, requesting consideration of a petition to the Governor to create a Special Commission to perform a study of the Death Penalty and to stop executions while the study is carried out and its recommendations addressed. If you would like to sign the petition or become actively involved in the campaign, please refer to the bulletin board in the Parish Hall.

A PRAYER FOR SEPTEMBER

God we pray for all laborers everywhere. Help us to be mindful that in some places many are not free but slave laborers, or are children or women working in awful conditions getting paid little or nothing. Help us to be mindful of the people crossing our borders to come to our country for a new life, better wages and better conditions, but are unable to obtain legal documents to do so. God help us to do the right thing. God we pray for the day when all laborers are set free by You. Amen

A MESSAGE FROM THE BISHOP

By now many of you have received an invitation to get ready for Open Door Sunday, October 12, when we will all make an effort to greet people who come to worship with us in our local churches.

Open Door Sunday is not anything strange or new or mysterious or difficult. It is simply what we ought to be doing every Sunday: opening our doors and inviting people in. We need to let them know that there is a place where God’s unconditional love is made evident. And that place is their local Episcopal Church.

We will gather in Little Rock October 10-11 as a way to remind ourselves that it is not business as usual in the Episcopal Church in Arkansas. We gather in Little Rock as a way to share the excitement of being churches that are focused outwardly, not inwardly.

The phrase “Open Door Sunday” reminds us that we have to have our doors open. Yes, opened doors make a statement. Each one of us knows how discouraging it is every time we try to open a door and it is locked. Going to church should never feel like that.

I know that many of us are tentative when it comes time to open doors and focus on the newcomer. But the time has come to do so. Some people have asked if we really

have time to get ready for a diocesan gathering, if we really have time to get ready to greet people on Sunday morning. Well, if we don’t start now, just when will we start? There will always be a reason as to why “now” is not the right time. There is no perfect time; there is only the chance that we

have every day to start turning God’s future kingdom into a present reality. I don’t think we need to hinder or delay the truth that God wants us to begin opening our doors now. I am excited about this opportunity to allow God to transform who we are, and I hope you are as well.

I hope all of you will join me on October 10th and 11th in Little Rock. (Ed. Note: Edited for length.)

We are thinking of forming a “caravan” to Little Rock on Saturday, October 11, returning after the close of the session. If you are interested in participating, please let Sharon know.

“You in my father’s kingdom? Do you believe in some kind of cheap grace? Get real. Now repeat after me, very slowly and clearly, “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and …”

“Now if you want any help from me, you’ve got to take responsibility. You got yourself into this mess and you need to confess that very loudly and clearly so that no Gospel writer will forget to underscore it. These men have a perfect right to stone you, but if you will make a loud enough confession, I’ll see what I can do to help you. But don’t you ever, ever commit adultery again! Do you hear me!?”

–Jesus did NOT say this to the woman taken in adultery.

“I really should not be out here talking to you. You understand that, I hope. And don’t be telling anyone else about this conversation lest somebody misunderstand my compassion. Before you can drink any of my living water, you have got to leave your current lover and go back to your very first husband. And I expect you to tell everyone how bad you have been. Then I’ll see what I can do for you.”

–Jesus did NOT say this at Cana.

“Mother! Here you go messing in my business again. They don’t need any more wine. After all, they have been drinking over a week.
A Message from Bishop Benfield

(Edited for length)

For years many congregations had something called hospitality committees or welcoming committees. A more authentic attitude toward hospitality is for all of us in the church to realize that hospitality is at the heart of who we are as Christians who gather each week.

We must constantly be aware that the next person through our door is not someone who is to be taught “how we do things,” but is instead the embodiment of the risen Christ. The next person who comes in our doors has as much to offer us as we have to offer him or her. Our newcomers come in to our churches from a world that is often harsh and distant and frightening. Our call is to make anyone who walks in our doors feel safe and at home. When new people walk in the door, they need to know that we are their brothers and sisters. That is something a committee can never do, and something that every last one of us as a Christian is called to as a way of life.

FROM THE GUILD

ECW will hold a Bazaar workshop on Thursday, May 15th at 9AM. Sue Wigger has a couple of cute projects for willing hands. If anyone has any pretty handkerchiefs to donate for one of the craft projects, please bring them to the church ASAP. You many leave them in the parish hall.

ECW will meet at 6 PM on Wednesday, May 21st, at The Chopping Block for food and fellowship. Call Beckie at 394-2187 if you plan to attend, but last minute attendees are always welcome!

Our church Yard Sale has been scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 27-28th, from 8 AM until 1PM both days. We will need volunteers (starting at 9AM) on the Wednesday before the sale to set up and price everything. If you are willing to help us set-up, or to work during the sale, please call Beckie or Marj Kassien.

Bears spotted at Camp Mitchell!

Eighteen heart bears made their trek to Camp Mitchell for distribution to Time for J.O.Y. attendees. The retreat pampers and spiritually uplifts young women from around the diocese. Thanks to Sharon, Judy, Marj, Marian, Beckie and Bill (chauffeurs) for helping out in this project.
